Ossian Singing

This bronze cabinet-piece shows the aged Ossian, (son of Fingal and father of Oscar) lamenting over his dead son, as described in James Macpherson’s epic poem Temora (1765). The ancient bard is depicted in the costume of a “declined” period (bound leggings and cloak with brooch) as seen in the front view of the figure. The back of the piece presents a curiously contrary account, with the empty helmet placed behind the colossal, muscular and ultimately youthful back. For as this is Oscar’s helmet, so it is also that hero’s back we see, superimposed upon the otherwise frail remains of his father’s figure, like a memory of other years.

"Thus shall we pass, O warriors, in the day of our fall. Then
Let us be renowned when we may; and leave our fame behind us,
Like the last beams of the sun, when he hides his red head
In the west."

Ossian’s arthritic fingers decline to ply the harp-strings; one hand merely hangs upon the instrument, the other over his knee. The sight has entirely left his right eye, the left retaining only vestigial vision. In poverty, the last of the Fingalians, he sits barefoot at his song.
